The CDC estimates that federally funded programs aimed to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) helped avert approximately 32 million cases of gonorrhea from 1971-2003. In addition to reducing the number of infections, these programs also saved tax-payers and the government an estimated $1.4 billion in medical costs.

Montana has taken steps to protect access to abortion clinics. In April, Governor Brian Schweitzer signed a law making it illegal to obstruct entry or exit to a health care facility. The measure prohibits anti-choice protestors from coming within eight feet of a person without their consent when attempting to distribute materials or protest abortions.

More news of a governor standing up to protect the rights of women in his state: New Hampshire Governor John Lynch signed a measure in June that will allow women to seek emergency contraception (EC) directly from pharmacists without having to first obtain a prescription.

Sore Spot

New legislation enacted in May concerning sexual and reproductive health now make it mandatory that one parent be notified when a minor seeks an abortion in Florida and Oklahoma. Additionally, a provision in Georgia's existing law that an adult other than a parent could be notified when a minor seeks an abortion was repealed by the Governor.

Rates of Caesarean sections continue to soar. The New York Times reported that 26% of all births in New York City are Caesarean deliveries; statewide the rate is 28%. A survey of 44 New York hospitals found that 9 had C-section rates greater than 30%. As a barometer, 7% of all births in 1970 were Caesarean deliveries.

A recent survey found that there are fewer designated exercise areas (such as parks, bike paths, and public pools) in low-income and minority neighborhoods. Low-income individuals and minorities have the greatest risk of all Americans of being overweight; the survey's findings highlight the importance of reducing barriers related to physical activity.
