G-P mills to Domtar. Georgia-Pacific Group completed the sale of four paper mills to Canada's Domtar Inc. for US$1.65 billion. Proceeds of the sale plants--uncoated fine paper mills at Ashdown, AK, Nekoosa and Port Edwards, WI, and Woodland, ME--will be used to repay debt, which stands at over US$14 billion. The sale of the mills, which employ approximately 3,200 people, is part of Georgia-Pacific's plan to switch its focus from traditional pulp and paper to consumer products.

Georgia Pacific Corp. (G-P) and privately held Gulf States Paper Corp. have agreed to dissolve their joint venture for the sale and marketing of solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard. The joint venture has been in place since May 1997 and included SBS paperboard produced at G-P's Crossett, AR, mill and SBS output from Gulf States' Demopolis, AL, mill. The venture will end December 30.
