Judging for the awards will take place on Thursday, March 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park. The judges will review more than 80 projects, representing ideas in biochemistry, health/medicine, microbiology and life sciences.

Students will staff their own exhibits during the competition and discuss their research with the BIO Geneius judges, who include representatives from San Francisco Bay Area biotechnology companies. Projects are evaluated in three categories: presentation, creativity and scientific method.

BIO Geneius Awards will be presented to the top 20 entries at an Award ceremony on Saturday, March 13. The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of $1,500 and a trip to Seattle to attend the BIO International Meeting and Exhibition in May 1999. The second-place winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000, and the third-place winner will receive $500. All 20 student winners will be invited, along with their teachers, on a tour of a Bay Area biotech company.

"This program was established five years ago as a complement to area science fairs to help foster students' interest in biotechnology and related areas such as biochemistry and biophysics biophysics, application of various methods and principles of physical science to the study of biological problems. In physiological biophysics physical mechanisms have been used to explain such biological processes as the transmission of nerve impulses, the muscle ," said Jody Lindell, a partner in KPMG's Western Area Health Care Practice. "We hope these rewards will stimulate original thinking and creative solutions in the minds of today's young people. We hope it creates a greater awareness of the importance of scientific achievement."

Each year, the BIO Geneius Awards are implemented in a new city, determined by the site of the annual BIO International Biotechnology Meeting and Exhibition, set for Seattle this May. In addition to Seattle and San Francisco, competitions will also take place this year in Philadelphia and New York New York, state, United States
