Future Communications Software Announces the First Commercially Available Fault Tolerant IS-IS Routing Protocol.

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2002

Future Communications Software, a leading provider of communications software source code products and services, announced the availability of its IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) An ISO protocol that provides dynamic routing between routers. IS-IS is an interior gateway protocol (IGP) and was the first comprehensive link state protocol.  (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) protocol software product, a key routing component that is essential for resilient carrier networks.

Future Communications Software, along with its parent company, Future Software Limited is the first company in the world to be shipping a commercial IS-IS implementation with fault tolerance capabilities. FutureIS-IS will allow carriers to deploy routing software in networks of practically any size.

"Control plane protocols like IS-IS are being implemented in networking equipment demanding a high level of reliability. FutureIS-IS's fault tolerance features, which include 1:1 redundancy, enable equipment vendors to support this demand. The ability to replicate the routing information between a primary and backup IS-IS entity allows for rapid switchover, in the event of a failure. In addition, the support for multiple routing instances, which can be used in a virtual router environment, make FutureIS-IS a strong candidate for carrier class equipment," said Ashish Basu, Vice President - Sales and Marketing.

The product is ready for most of the popular Operating Systems including VxWorks, OSE OSE - Open Systems Environment , Nucleus, QNX A multiuser, multitasking, real time operating system for PCs from QNX Software Systems, Ltd., Ottawa, Ontario (www.qnx.com), that is noted for its low-memory requirement and rapid response. Similar to Unix, it has been in use since the early 1980s. , Solaris and Linux. It supports multiple interface types including ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode See ATM.

), FR (Frame Relay), Ethernet and point-to-point links. FutureIS-IS has a distributed architecture allowing the control plane of the equipment to be decoupled and separated from the data plane Internet Protocol (IP) forwarding path. This enables carrier class performance using network processors or other hardware devices and distributed processing. FutureIS-IS provides support for management using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  (Simple Network Management Protocol) or CLI (Command Line Interface) or other mechanisms through an open management interface.

The IS-IS protocol offers an attractive alternative to OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) A routing protocol that determines the best path for routing IP traffic over a TCP/IP network based on distance between nodes and several quality parameters.  (Open Shortest Path First) protocol. The IS-IS protocol is secure, easily extensible and can be deployed in the largest of Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP)
