Fusion feet. (New York).The fusion of tap with flamenco, flamenco with Indian classical dance, or tap with Indian is not new in the experimentation of the foot cultures of the world. The dance, consisting of forward and backward steps to music in duple time, was originally used to open ceremonial balls; later its steps became livelier and it came to be paired , the dancers did some neat sparring, trading, and challenging of one another with their own rhythms. Kalaf wrote a neutral percussion score to help the dancers hear each other's patterns more clearly. Another factor in making this venture a success, says Kalaf, was Holmes's ability to translate rhythms from one cultural context to another. |
