Fusion feet. (New York).


The fusion of tap with flamenco, flamenco with Indian classical dance, or tap with Indian is not new in the experimentation of the foot cultures of the world. But a new spin of all three with good ol' modern dance leaping into the mix was seen and heard in the Jazz Tap Ensemble's new piece, Solea, composed by Jerry Kalaf, in November 2002 at The Joyce Theater The Joyce Theater is a 472-seat dance performance venue located in the Chelsea area of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Stately court dance introduced from southern Europe into England in the 16th century. The dance, consisting of forward and backward steps to music in duple time, was originally used to open ceremonial balls; later its steps became livelier and it came to be paired
, the dancers did some neat sparring, trading, and challenging of one another with their own rhythms. Kalaf wrote a neutral percussion score to help the dancers hear each other's patterns more clearly. Another factor in making this venture a success, says Kalaf, was Holmes's ability to translate rhythms from one cultural context to another.
