Furniture imports hit $15 billion.

 -- U.S. furniture imports eclipsed $15 billion for the first time last year and, in the process, pushed the nation's furniture trade deficit to an unprecedented height.

Furniture made in China represented 43% of the $15.9 billion total. U.S. imports of wood and upholstered furniture from China climbed 22.3% to nearly $6.8 billion, far more than double that of Canada's $2.6 billion and nearly more than the next seven countries combined.

U.S. furniture exports, meanwhile, increased 9% to $1.4 billion last year compared to 2003, resulting in a record trade deficit of $14.5 billion. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

The weak dollar helped drag furniture imports from Italy down 11.3% to $1.1 billion.

Taiwan, which was the leading source of U.S. furniture imports throughout the latter half of the 1980s, tumbled out of the Top 10, opening up a spot for the Philippines.
