Funk Software Ships PPP-Based Remote Access Client; Dual DOS and Windows Interfaces, Multiprotocol Support, and Integrated Remote Control Give Dial-In Users Flexible, Speedy Access to all LAN-Based Resources; Xylogics, Dayna, and WRQ to License Technology.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 1995--Funk Software, Inc. this week began shipping the WanderLink PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using  Client Pack, standards-based remote access software which lets mobile workers access all resources on a LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , including their own PCs - regardless of which PPP-based remote access server they're dialing in to. Supported remote access servers include 3COM's AccessBuilder, NEC's Dr. Bond, the Digital Equipment Corporation DECserver, the Shiva Shiva or Siva (shē`və), one of the greatest gods of Hinduism, also called Mahadeva. The "horned god" and phallic worship of the Indus valley civilization may have been a prototype of Shiva worship or Shaivism.  LanRover/E, remote access servers from Cisco Systems “Cisco” redirects here.  and Xyplex, and other remote access servers which support the Point to Point Protocol (PPP).

In a related development, Funk Software has entered into technology partnerships with several manufacturers of remote access hardware. Xylogics and Dayna Communications have licensed the WanderLink Client technology for distribution with their remote access servers. WRQ (WRQ, Inc., Seattle, WA, www.wrq.com) A software company that specialized in terminal emulation and NT-Unix integration products.  products.

The WanderLink PPP Client Pack includes the WanderLink PPP dial-in Client and Proxy, a powerful remote control program that runs from Windows. With the WanderLink PPP Client, a mobile worker can connect over phone lines to any PPP remote access server and become a node on the network. Once the remote user has connected to the network, he or she can run Proxy over the connection to take over and operate PCs on that network, even those not equipped with a phone line and modem. This integrated remote node A terminal or computer located apart from the main network. It may refer to a branch office or a traveling user with a laptop. Access to the company LAN is typically made via an Internet or dial-up connection. See remote control software.  and remote control capability lets a remote PC user choose the optimal method of access to the enterprise LAN - and easily switch between the two types of operations within a Windows session.

Because the WanderLink PPP Client Pack includes remote control capability, support for both IP and IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet.  transport protocols, and dual DOS and Windows interfaces, it offers the most functionality of any dial-in client software. Plus, the WanderLink PPP Client Pack is based on the standard Point to Point Protocol (PPP), so a remote user can connect to many different networks - regardless of which remote access server is installed - right from the same interface.

"Working from home or on the road has become a way of life for many people," said Cimarron Boozer, vice president of product marketing at Funk Software. "The WanderLink PPP Client Pack provides these workers with full access to all resources on the LAN - via both remote node and remote control - while requiring them to run only one program on their PC. This not only simplifies how they connect to the LAN, but also lets them conserve memory and disk space on their laptops."

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

The WanderLink PPP Client Pack includes the following capabilities:

o Remote node access to the network, so a mobile worker's PC becomes a node on the network, with its own node address The identification of a host, workstation, server, printer or other device in a network. See physical address and Internet address.  and full access to all LAN resources

o Remote control access, so, once connected, a remote user can take over and operate any PC on the LAN, and only images and keystrokes travel to the remote PC

o Support for both IP and IPX

o Simultaneous access to both IP and IPX services on the network

o Dynamic connection to the network, from DOS or Windows

o Connection to any PPP-based remote access server, including 3COM's AccessBuilder, NEC's Dr. Bond, Shiva's LanRover/E, DEC's DECserver, and those from Cisco Systems and Xyplex

o Full support of PPP services, including dialback, Password Authentication Protocol (networking) Password Authentication Protocol - (PAP) An authentication scheme used by PPP servers to validate the identity of the originator of the connection.

PAP applies a two-way handshaking procedure.
(PAP (1) (Password Authentication Protocol) An access control protocol for dialing into a network that provides only basic functionality. When the client logs onto the network, the network access server (NAS) requests the username and password from the client and ), and Challenge Handshake handshake - handshaking  Authentication (1) Verifying the integrity of a transmitted message. Funk Software, Inc., develops add-on utilities for NetWare networks. In October 1992, the company began shipping AppMeter, a software usage metering program that allows companies to comply with software licensing agreements without over-buying. Proxy, a powerful remote control program, was released in January 1993, and allows users to take over and operate one or more PCs or file servers at the same time, right from Windows. WanderLink, the company's newest product, is an integrated "remote node and remote control" product that lets remote PC users access all LAN-based resources on a NetWare network. WanderLink began shipping in December 1994. The company is also known for its line of add-ins to Lotus 1-2-3, which include Sideways and Allways.
