Fundraising surprises a factor as council races head to wire. (Politics).

As candidates in the even-numbered L.A. City Council districts enter the home stretch for the March 4 primary, the latest campaign finance reports show a couple of surprises.

For starters, the hullabaloo over those mailers in the 14th Council District race between incumbent Nick Pacheco Lauro "Nick" Pacheco, Jr. is an American attorney, politician, and a member of the Democratic Party. Pacheco served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council (1999-2003).  and former Assembly Speaker and mayoral candidate Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  had little effect on fundraising. Pacheco was still able to raise $67,670 in the fourth quarter, giving him $341,000, nearly three times Villaraigosa's total. But Villaraigosa can't be ruled out; he raised $120,000 in the fourth quarter and also received the County Federation of Labor endorsement.

More telling could be the sudden death earlier this month of Pacheo's chief of staff, Lloyd Monserratt Lloyd Monserratt (December 2, 1966 - January 9, 2003), was born in Los Angeles, California, the eldest son of Ecuadorian immigrants Carlos and Olga Monserratt.[1] His father was an architect and named his eldest son after Frank Lloyd Wright. , who successfully managed Pacheco's underdog 1999 campaign. Monserratt, 36, died on Jan. 9 from complications following surgery.

It may not grab headlines in the same way as the 14th District, but the 10th District race to replace termed out Nate Holden Nathaniel "Nate" R. Holden (1929-) served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1987 to 2002. He previously served a term on the California State Senate and was Assistant Chief Deputy to then Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn.  is shaping up to be the closest.

Two of the candidates, Deron Williams Deron Michael Williams (born June 26, 1984 in Parkersburg, West Virginia) is an American professional basketball player currently with the Utah Jazz of the NBA. He is also a former collegiate player for the University of Illinois.  (Holden's pick) and Martin Ludlow Martin Ludlow (born 1964) was a member of the Los Angeles City Council, USA, from 2003 to 2005. He represented the 10th district. He was elected May 20, 2003 and resigned on June 30, 2005.  (a former County Federation of Labor political director) have pulled out in front of the pack. Williams raised $77,000 in the fourth quarter, bringing his total to $192,500. Ludlow raised $84,000 in the fourth quarter to bring his total to $164,000. Former state Assemblyman Rod Wright Rod Wright (born in Penrith, New South Wales) was an Australian rugby league player for the Penrith Panthers in the National Rugby League competition. His position of choice was at lock.  is a distant third, having raised about $80,000.

Meanwhile, in the race to replace termed out Hal Bernson in the 12th District, Bernson chief deputy Grieg Smith holds a commanding fundraising lead, with $216,000 raised so far.

With no one else in striking distance of that total--the closest is affordable housing developer Robert Vinson with $51,000--Grieg is "virtually certain to place in the primary election," according to Encino-based political consultant Coby King. The only question is whether Smith will be able to win 50 percent outright and thereby avoid a runoff.
