The author provide a review of the extent of the back pain problem and of basic anatomy. The concept of pain perception and its effect on function are discussed. The problems of current assessment techniques are discussed and illustrated. New testing techniques are discussed, and sources for equipment are given.

The authors' approach to "functional restoration" is presented in detail. There is a chapter on physical therapy and a chapter on occupational therapy, written from the physician's point of view. The psychosocioeconomic implications of the disability also are discussed.

This book would be of interest to physical therapists who run back schools or work in industrial settings.
