Sports days are annual events staged by many schools in which children participate in competitive sporting activities, often with the aim of winning trophies or prizes. . Holmfirth and Meltham Lions took Kirklees Disabled Sports Club (KDSC) to the Lions International Lions International, organization of business and professional people, founded (1917) by Melvin Jones. The International Association of Lions Clubs (popularly known as Lions International) is devoted to meeting community needs either through its own efforts or in Fun and Sports Day on Saturday. Some 56 people competed from Kirklees at Sandall Park in Doncaster. The event is attended by disabled groups throughout Yorkshire. Holmfirth and Meltham Lions have taken a group from Kirklees there every year since 1993. This year three teams were entered in the five-a-side football competition. Bert Neary told the Examiner that wheelchair-user Carl Widdup got out of his chair to go in goal. From sitting on the floor he saved three goals. Mr Neary said: "It was fantastic. The weather was great which is good because it's rained the last three years we've been."
