After initially shutting down production, the company got permission to keep about half of the oil flowing while it makes other repairs. West Coast refineries had been worried about the effect the closure would have on gas prices--as much as 20 percent of the crude oil processed in California each year comes from Prudhoe, with much of that used by five of the state's 14 refineries.
