Fujitsu introduces 230MB parallel port magneto-optical drive; offers benefits of MO and one-step easy installation; breakthrough price makes standardized solution affordable; frees users from proprietary solutions.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1995--Fujitsu Computer Products of America, the market leader in 3.5-inch removable/rewritable magneto-optical (MO) drives, today announced the DynaMO 230 Parallel Port, a new 3.5-inch magneto-optical (MO) drive that connects to any IBM-compatible PC A PC that is compatible with the IBM PC and PS/2 standards. Although this term is still used, it had validity in the early days when PC makers were trying to copy the IBM PC, and many PCs were not compatible. Today, PCs conform to standards set by Intel, Microsoft and the PC industry at large.  with a parallel or printer port.

The DynaMO 230 Parallel Port provides 230MB of storage -- 160 times greater than traditional floppies -- on standardized removable MO disks. In addition, the new drive has a list price of $449, marking a significant price breakthrough for MO.

The Fujitsu DynaMO 230 was the first 230 MB magneto-optical drive magneto-optical drive - magneto-optical disk  shipping in volume when it was first launched in mid-1994. Like the rest of the DynaMO 230 family, the new DynaMO 230 Parallel Port provides twice the storage capacity of competitive removable cartridge removable cartridge

A hard disk that has a self-contained casing, can be removed from the drive, and has greater storage capacity than floppy disks.
disk drives and the DynaMO disks cost less than 10 cents per megabyte.

"By offering a convenient and low cost parallel port MO, Fujitsu makes it simple for the average desktop and portable PC user to reap the benefits of high-capacity, high-reliability and standardized MO technology," said Rich Jorgensen, director of optical disk products for Fujitsu Computer Products. "The fast throughput speed and portability of the DynaMO 230 Parallel Port makes storage of huge multimedia, presentation and other large files practical and easy."

Continuing Fujitsu's policy of providing standardized MO drives, the DynaMO 230 Parallel Port uses media that is backward read compatible by two generations. ISO (1) See ISO speed.

DynaMO 230 Parallel Port Features

The DynaMO 230 Parallel Port features a 30-millisecond seek time and an internal data transfer rate of up to 2MB/sec. Included with each MO drive is a pre-formatted magneto-optical disk (hardware, storage) magneto-optical disk - (MO) A plastic or glass disk coated with a compound (often TbFeCo) with special optical, magnetic and thermal properties. The disk is read by bouncing a low-intensity laser off the disk. , installation software and manual, parallel port and power adapter An external power supply for laptop computers and just about every portable or semi-portable electronic device on the market. Also called an "AC adapter," it contains a rectifier to convert AC current to DC and a transformer to convert voltage from 120 down to 9, 12, 15 or whatever is  cables, and warranty information, Fujitsu also backs its DynaMO 230 drives with a one-year warranty on parts and labor, and its DynaMO 230 disks with a lifetime warranty.

The DynaMO 230 Parallel Port's low-profile (1.4" x 5" x 8.2") saves desk space. When the DynaMO 230 Parallel Port occupies the parallel port of a PC or notebook, a convenient connector on the back of the DynaMO 230 Parallel Port allows an additional parallel port device, such as a printer, to be connected to the PC as well, effectively extending the utility of the single parallel port.

-- Formatted capacity 230MB/per disk -- Seek time less than 30 milliseconds -- Rotational speed Rotational speed (sometimes called speed of revolution) indicates, for example, how fast a motor is running. Rotational speed is equivalent to angular speed, but with different units. Rotational speed tells how many complete rotations (i.e.   3,600 rpm -- Interface Parallel Port -- Cache 256 KB -- Dimensions (DxWxH) 8.2" x 4.8" x 1.5" -- Weight 2 lbs.

Magneto-Optical Advantages

Magneto-optical disks are both standardized and stable. Data recorded onto an MO disk can be read by any ISO standardized MO drive. MO drives and media use a combination of magnetic and laser technologies that make MO disks safe from contact with a magnetic field. Testing has shown that MO media has a long lifespan of at least 30 years; much longer than their magnetic media counterparts.

Price and Availability

The DynaMO 230 Parallel Port is available now at popular retail computer stores and superstores such as Computer City, Fry's Electronics Fry's Electronics is a specialty retailer of software, consumer electronics, computer hardware and household appliances with a chain of superstores headquartered in Silicon Valley. Starting with one store located in Sunnyvale, California, USA, the chain now boasts sales of $2.  and Micro Center, among others. It is also available through OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and , direct, and value-added reseller A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution.  channels.
