Corporation (Nasdaq: RMTR RMTR Redesigned Missile Tracking Radar ) and Fujitsu Limited announced today that the companies have completed their work in a two-year joint development program to develop an embeddable 0.35-micron, 3-volt, multi-level metal ferroelectric random access memory (storage) Ferroelectric Random Access Memory - (FRAM) A type of non-volatile read/write random access semiconductor memory. FRAM combines the advantages of SRAM - writing is roughly as fast as reading, and EPROM - non-volatility and in-circuit programmability.  (FRAM (1) (Ferroelectric RAM) See FeRAM.

The new process, which is expected to be production-ready during the second half of 2001, is targeted to improve the cost-effectiveness of standard FRAM memory devices, as well as spawn the development of advanced FRAM-based ICs such as microcontrollers and application-specific integrated circuits with embedded memory.

"We are pleased to announce the completion of 0.35-micron FRAM technology development," said Tatsuya Yamazaki, Fujitsu's director of FRAM development. "This advanced FRAM technology, which was successfully developed in collaboration with Ramtron, is expected to open opportunities for FRAM in the marketplace due to a good balance between cost and performance."

"The success of this co-development effort evidences Fujitsu and Ramtron's commitment to pushing the FRAM technology envelope," said Tom Davenport, Ramtron technology group vice president. "We look forward to realizing the benefits of this new process through the development of a new generation of cost-effective FRAM products and market opportunities. At 0.35-micron, we are rapidly closing in on cost parity with EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting.  technology, which will provide us with an excellent opportunity to drive mainstream production volumes and increase FRAM market share."

Ramtron/Fujitsu Partnership History

Fujitsu and Ramtron originally began working together in 1996 when they entered into a high-density FRAM technology development and licensing agreement. Since that time, the companies have produced prototype devices of the world's first one-megabit FRAM memory and a microcontroller with 64 kilobits (kb) of embedded FRAM memory. Fujitsu is also a major production source for Ramtron's current 16- to 256-kilobit products using 0.5-micron FRAM design rules at Fujitsu's high-volume FRAM manufacturing facility in Iwate, Japan.

ULVAC Japan, Ltd. Support for the Development

ULVAC Japan, Ltd. supported the development program through their equipment set located at Ramtron's Colorado Springs development facility. The set included a ZX-1000 sputter tool, an advanced plasma etcher For the formation of integrated circuits it is necessary to structure various layers. This can be done by a Plasma etcher. Plasma etching of dielectrics, semiconductors and metals is state of the art today.  and an RIE n. 1. See Rye.

About FRAM Memory

Ramtron's patented FRAM memories are a revolutionary type of semiconductor memory that combines high-performance and low-power operation with the ability to store data in the absence of power. Due to the product's unique advantages, FRAM memories are expected to enhance a variety of electronic consumer and industrial products. Current applications for Ramtron's FRAM memory devices include electronic power meters, smart cards, test instrumentation, factory automation, laser printers, security systems, and other systems that require reliable storage of data without an external power source.
