Fujitsu Triples Magneto-Optical Storage Capacity With New 3.5-inch 640MB MO Drive for Macintosh; Contains Over-write Technology Increasing Performance By 33 Percent.BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 1996--Fujitsu Computer Products of America, the market leader in magneto-optical (MO) drives, today announced the DynaMO 640, a 640MB drive externally packaged for the Macintosh market. The DynaMO 640 offers triple the capacity of the current 230MB offerings on a single disk, and delivers on the industry-standard road map for capacity increases. Also new to this generation of Fujitsu's popular DynaMO family is Over-Write (OW) technology, which increases write performance by up to 33 percent over previous generation DynaMO drives. Fujitsu's new MO drive, demonstrated here at the MacWorld Expo, offers high capacity and near-hard drive performance, enabling a broad range of applications. Key uses are basic storage, data transport between systems, system-on-a-disk, multimedia presentations and secure archival. The advantages of MO over other removable storage solutions are standardization standardization In industry, the development and application of standards that make it possible to manufacture a large volume of interchangeable parts. Standardization may focus on engineering standards, such as properties of materials, fits and tolerances, and drafting , investment protection, unlimited rewritability, and unrivaled data security. "Capacity and speed enable the Fujitsu DynaMO 640 to cost-effectively store and run an entire system, complex applications, large video or audio files, and elaborate web sites on a single 3.5-inch removable disk A disk or disk cartridge that is inserted into the drive for reading and writing and removed when not required. Using optical technologies, CDs and DVDs are the most common examples. ," said Isaac van Kempen, senior product line manager of optical disk products for Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "The user gets unlimited rewritability, performance at speeds equivalent to a 14x CD-ROM drive A device that holds and reads CD-ROM discs. CD-ROM drives generally also play audio CD discs by sending analog sound to the sound card via a 4-pin cable. For specifications of 10x, 20x, etc. drives, see CD-ROM drives. See CD-ROM, CD-ROM changer, CD-ROM server and CD-ROM audio cable. , media costs as low as 6 cents per megabyte One million bytes, or more precisely 1,048,576 bytes. Also MB, Mbyte and M-byte. See mega and space/time. (unit) megabyte - (MB, colloquially "meg") 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes = 1024 kilobytes. 1024 megabytes are one gigabyte. , and archival preservation of valuable data for a minimum of 30 years." The DynaMO 640, which can use 640MB and 540MB MO disks, allows users to access data from previous-generation 230MB and 128MB 3.5-inch MO cartridges
Forward compatibility is harder to achieve than backward compatibility, since, in the backward case, the input format is know whereas a forward compatible system needs to cope , data recorded on 640MB disks with this drive will be accessible by two future generations and capacities of MO drives. Fujitsu is the first 3.5-inch MO drive manufacturer to announce support for OW, an MO recording technique that reduces the time required to record data by eliminating the need to re-erase. Prior to OW, MO writing operations involved two passes; one to erase existing data, and a second to write new information. With OW, writing occurs in a single pass, therefore significantly improving performance. Performance-Enhancing Features Seek time on the DynaMO 640 averages 35 milliseconds and, with the drive's Fast SCSI A SCSI interface that transfers at 10 Mbytes/sec rather than 5 Mbytes/sec. The maximum cable length is 9.8 feet. See SCSI. (hardware) Fast SCSI - A variant on the SCSI-2 bus. It uses the same 8-bit bus as the original SCSI-1 but runs at up to 10MB/s - double the speed of SCSI-1. (Small Computer System Interface), data transfer rates of 2.34 to 3.9MB/sec (internal) and up to 10 MB/sec (interface) are achieved. Other performance-enhancing features of the DynaMO 640 include a 2MB or 512KB data buffer In computing, a buffer is a region of memory used to temporarily hold data while it is being moved from one place to another. Typically, the data is stored in a buffer as it is retrieved from an input device (such as a keyboard) or just before it is sent to an output device (such and rotational speeds Rotational speed (sometimes called speed of revolution) indicates, for example, how fast a motor is running. Rotational speed is equivalent to angular speed, but with different units. Rotational speed tells how many complete rotations (i.e. of 3,600rpm. The new drive also features an energy-conserving sleep mode that reduces the average power consumption to 1.7 watts when not in use. The drive's Fast SCSI interface also allows cross-platform compatibility to PC, Macintosh and UNIX systems Noun 1.
