Fujitsu Siemens Computers, McDATA and Decru Launch Joint Solution for Secure, Distributed Data Protection.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Secure Long Distance Virtual Tape Backups Now Possible without Increasing Backup Window

Fujitsu Siemens Computers Fujitsu Siemens Computers is a Japanese and German IT vendor, selling consumer and business computing products in the markets of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (products marketed elsewhere are sold under the Fujitsu brand). , McDATA Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDTA)(Nasdaq: MCDT MCDT Micro Credit Development Trust SACCO (Uganda microfinance)
MCDT Microsoft Certified Desktop Technician
), and Decru, a NetApp company, today announced the release of a joint wide-area replication solution designed to simplify the backup process and improve security for tape vaulting.

The companies have worked together to integrate Fujitsu Siemens (Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Inc. (USA), Milpitas, CA, www.fujitsu-siemens.com) Fujitsu Siemens Computers USA is a wholly owned research and development subsidiary of Fujitsu Siemens Computers.  Computers' market-leading CentricStor(TM) Virtual Tape Appliance with McDATA's high-performance Edge3000 Storage Routers and Decru DataFort(TM) storage security appliances to help enterprise customers with backup and disaster recovery operations Operations conducted to search for, locate, identify, rescue, and return personnel, sensitive equipment, or items critical to national security.  that frequently span hundreds or thousands of kilometers.

Organizations with distributed data centers often face the challenge of creating backup tapes at one location, and then physically transporting them via ground transportation to remote locations for disaster recovery purposes. This is costly in terms of both time and money, and also leaves sensitive data vulnerable during transit. With this joint solution, CentricStor customers can now back up data securely to physical tape at a remote facility over WAN connections, while eliminating backup and restore bottlenecks for the entire data center environment.

With integrated functions of Information Lifecycle Management Information Lifecycle Management refers to a wide-ranging set of strategies for administering storage systems on computing devices. Specifically, four categories of storage strategies may be considered under the auspices of ILM.  (ILM) Fujitsu Siemens Computers' CentricStor Virtual Tape Appliance provides comprehensive and highly scalable virtual tape services for Fibre-Channel, FICON (FIber CONnector) An IBM mainframe channel introduced with its G5 servers in 1998. Based on the Fibre Channel standard, it boosts the transfer rate of ESCON's half-duplex 17MB/sec to a full-duplex 100MB/sec.  and ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas.  attached hosts and NAS (1) See network access server.

(2) (Network Attached Storage) A specialized file server that connects to the network. A NAS device contains a slimmed-down operating system and a file system and processes only I/O requests by supporting the popular
devices. CentricStor's policy-based automation of tape operations for distributed data center environments provides server-independent autonomous tape management services for physical tape and library operations and eliminates all server dependencies by means of its virtual layer. Since CentricStor offers a near-infinite number of virtual tape drives, its deployment eliminates resource bottlenecks and reduces the significant time window required for data backup or recovery, thereby also increasing data availability Refers to the degree to which data can be instantly accessed. The term is mostly associated with service levels that are set up either by the internal IT organization or that may be guaranteed by a third party datacenter or storage provider.  via failsafe configurations.

The McDATA Edge3000 Storage Router enables the CentricStor system to be situated thousands of kilometers away from the physical tape library where data is stored, while maintaining local-like read and write performance over Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub. , utilizing McDATA's patented Tape-Pipelining technology.

Decru DataFort FC-Series storage security appliances can be deployed between CentricStor and the McDATA router, compressing and encrypting data before it crosses the wire, and while it is at rest on the remote backup tapes. Decru's hardware-based encryption ensures wire-speed performance, and the Decru Lifetime Key Management(TM) system automates key management and ensures data is available when and where it is needed.

Exhaustive testing (programming) exhaustive testing - Executing a program with all possible combinations of inputs or values for program variables.  was conducted at Fujitsu Siemens Computers' facilities in Brussels, Belgium, to validate the solution and ensure that it delivered the data integrity, fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

(architecture) fault tolerance - 1. The ability of a system or component to continue normal operation despite the presence of hardware or software faults. This often involves some degree of redundancy.

and performance required by our enterprise customers.

Decru Quote:

"Identity theft is at an all-time high, and attackers are getting smarter. Enterprises are recognizing that security must be integrated into all aspects of data management," said Henk Jan Spanjaard, Managing Director, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) Refers to that region of the world. For example, one might see products packaged differently for the UK, EMEA and Asia Pacific markets. , Decru. "Decru is pleased to work with innovative companies like Fujitsu Siemens Computers and McDATA to add critical security to backup operations."

Fujitsu Siemens Computers Quote:

"Financial institutions, healthcare, manufacturing and the public sector are particularly vulnerable, especially if tapes need to be archived or moved to a secure remote location," said Dr. Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "By using the secure wide-area replication of tape data over CentricStor's virtual tape services the user can eliminate such risks while retaining unlimited backup performance in the data center. This joint solution grants our customers comprehensive protection of their sensitive data."

McDATA Quote:

"Protected Data access is a key requirement for our customers," said Raj Das, vice president of product marketing, McDATA. "That's why McDATA has actively worked with partners like Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Decru to offer a solution that eliminates the need to physically transport tape when backing up data to different locations. The end result is less downtime and a more secure backup process to protect critical data assets."

Analyst Quote by Joyce Becknell, Research Director EMEA, Sageza Group

"Three industry heavyweights are addressing the storage, networking and security needs of global companies with this new solution. Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Decru and McDATA deliver performance capabilities for virtual tape backup and restore over very long distances combined with encryption to guarantee that secure backups can be performed centrally - or at remote data centers located anywhere in the world."
