-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS), a leading provider of broadband communications and storage semiconductors, today announced that Fujitsu Limited has selected PMC-Sierra's metro transport semiconductor solutions for its flagship metro optical products: the FLASHWAVE(R) 7500 Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer Add/Drop Multiplexer

). The FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM integrates comprehensive SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) functionality onto individual Flexponder(TM) interface cards using PMC-Sierra's CHESS(TM) III chip set See chipset.. The complementary FLASHWAVE 4500 MSPP utilizes not only the CHESS III chip set but also PMC-Sierra's CHESS Wideband chip set. The CHESS Wideband chip set is used to achieve high-capacity VT1.5 grooming, as required by next-generation MSPPs to map data and TDM traffic into SONET/SDH tributaries.

The CHESS family of solutions enables Fujitsu to provide distributed, scalable metro transport solutions with reduced power, cost and complexity, even as Service Providers demand higher levels of integration and flexibility. These benefits improve fiber efficiency, reduce capital and operational costs, and provide Service Providers with the ability to introduce and more effectively manage both new Ethernet and existing T1/E1 services.

"Fujitsu continues to deliver best-in-class platforms for the optical networking market," said Minoru Takeno, General Manager of the photonics system group at Fujitsu Limited. "PMC-Sierra's CHESS portfolio offers highly integrated framers, scalable non-blocking switch fabrics and powerful pointer processors. PMC-Sierra's solutions best enabled us to meet customers' emerging needs, which are being driven by Triple Play service deployment. Key performance innovations, best-in-class analog and mixed-signal technology, and unmatched customer support clearly distinguish PMC-Sierra from other vendors."

"Fujitsu has achieved significant market share, both domestically and abroad, based on its technology leadership and strong FLASHWAVE product portfolio," said Dino Bekis, vice president of marketing and applications for PMC-Sierra's Communication Products Division. "We highly value our strategic relationship with Fujitsu and are pleased to be a key partner in the delivery of their flagship metro platforms. Our production-proven CHESS III and CHESS Wideband product families allow Fujitsu to deliver a highly scalable and flexible optical network architecture that enables advanced services with the quality that Service Providers demand."

Product Descriptions

CHESS III chip set for aggregating, grooming and transporting 2.5Gbit/s and 10Gbit/s metro services

CHESS III is the foundation chip set used to build the new generation of metro transport equipment. It offers a wide range of STS-1/AU-3 cross-connect solutions as well as a highly integrated framer solution for MSPPs and ROADMs.

The CHESS III chip set consists of the following devices:

TSE-Nx160 - 64-port cross-connect device that enables single stage non-blocking cross-connects to scale from 160 Gbit/s to 640 Gbit/s

TSE 240 - 96-port cross-connect device that reduces the software complexity of automatic protection switching using Message Assisted Protection Switching (MAPS(TM)) technology

TSE 120 - 74-port cross-connect device optimized for lower bandwidth, lower cost applications

ARROW-2x192 - highly integrated channelized 20 Gbit/s framer that supports 8 ports of OC-48/STM-16 or 2 ports of OC-192/STM-64

ARROW-1x192 - highly integrated channelized 10 Gbit/s framer that supports 4 ports of OC-48/STM-16 or 1 OC-192/STM-64 port

CHESS Wideband chip set for VT/TU VT/TU - Virtual Tributary/Tributary Unit grooming

The CHESS Wideband chip set is a highly integrated VT/TU grooming solution that enables cost-effective in-service upgrades to (micro)MSPPs, MSPPs and Optical Cross Connect systems.

The CHESS Wideband chip set consists of the following devices:

WSE 40 - 18-port wideband cross-connect, device that reduces the software complexity of automatic protection switching using MAPS technology

WSE 20 - 10-port wideband cross-connect device optimized for lower bandwidth, lower cost applications

TUPP TUPP - Tobacco Use Prevention Program 9953 - SONET/SDH tributary unit payload processor for 9953 Mbit/s

The CHESS family of solutions includes innovative technology such as MAPS for hardware-based protection switching and best-in-class TFI-5 high-speed serial backplane technology with PMC-Sierra's Rate Agile Serial I/O (RASIO(TM)).
