Fujitsu Continues to Expand Capabilities of Long Haul Products; Latest Release of the FLASHWAVE 7300 Transponder Improves Sparing, Space and Power Savings.

(OPEX See CAPEX. ) savings, add more services to their network and simplify network operations, Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. today revealed its latest release of the FLASHWAVE(1)(R) 7300 high-density transponder system offering an extremely small footprint, tunable lasers and efficient power utilization.

This latest release of the FLASHWAVE 7300 platform allows long haul carriers to enhance the economies of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

) transmission by transporting a wide breadth of services to reduce the operational overhead and maximize return on investment. To further drive down costs, the FLASHWAVE 7300 platform provides self-healing network protection, 2.4 Gbps multiplexers/transponders, or muxponders, to maximize the utilization of wavelengths, Forward Error Correction A communications technique that can correct bad data on the receiving end. Before transmission, the data are processed through an algorithm that adds extra bits for error correction. If the transmitted message is received in error, the correction bits are used to repair it.  (FEC See forward error correction.

) to achieve longer spans, and digital wrapper technology to enhance the performance monitoring and fault isolation of signals in the DWDM domain. Additional savings are made possible through the use of 22-channel tunable lasers, which allow all wavelengths in the entire C and L bands to be supported with a fraction of the cards typically required, decreasing inventory costs by up to 84% throughout the network.

"Fujitsu is dedicated to providing innovative solutions that allow long haul carriers to deploy the most efficient and cost-effective network possible," says Stephen Carlton, vice president of photonic product marketing for Fujitsu Network Communications. "The FLASHWAVE 7300 platform is yet another example of the technology we are continually developing to help long haul carriers lower their total network cost, generate revenue more quickly and increase their margin of profitability."

When used in conjunction with the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 7700 long haul DWDM system, the FLASHWAVE 7300 transponder can transport 176 full duplex channels at 10 Gbps in under five racks for tremendous space savings in crowded central offices and co-location spaces--no other DWDM commercial system can offer this capacity. Each gigabit of full duplex traffic consumes only 3.5 watts for a further reduction in recurring operating expenses Operating expenses
