The report indicates that the market for medical materials reached 846 billion yen ($7.1 bil) in 2005. The market is expected to reach 996.6 billion yen ($8.4 bil) in 2009, up 18% from 2005.

Demand for intraocular lenses are expected to grow in response to an increase in the number of patients who have cataract cataract, in medicine, opacity of the lens of the eye, which impairs vision. In the young, cataracts are generally congenital or hereditary; later they are usually the result of degenerative changes brought on by aging or systemic disease (diabetes). .

The sector for artificial organs, in which artificial kidneys accounted for more than 40%, is expected to rise from 146.9 billion yen ($1.2 bil) to 164.1 billion yen ($1.4 bil) over the four-year period.

The sector for dental materials, which reached 16.9 billion yen ($142.0 mil) in 2005, will increase to 21.5 billion yen ($180.6 mil) in 2009. Currently, artificial dental roots account for more than 50% of the sector, and needs for implant-based dental reconstruction are steadily growing.
