Frozen Oceans: the Floating World of Pack Ice.

FROZEN OCEANS: The Floating World of Pack Ice DAVID David, in the Bible
David, d. c.970 B.C., king of ancient Israel (c.1010–970 B.C.), successor of Saul. The Book of First Samuel introduces him as the youngest of eight sons who is anointed king by Samuel to replace Saul, who had been deemed a failure.
 N. THOMAS

Frozen seawater, or pack ice, covers 13 percent of Earth's surface, an area comparable to that of the planet's deserts. Because most pack ice is in desolate and frigid places, only recently have scientists gained much understanding of it. Thomas describes how polar scientists gather data from high-tech ships on the sea, as well as from satellites, to understand the physics of ice formation, ocean dynamics, and the behavior of ice over time. , pack ice teems with life, from photosynthetic microalgae to 6-foot-tall sea sponges to polar bears and penguins. The author examines how each organism lives and the role it plays in maintaining the biodiversity of the polar seas. He explains how the study of pack ice is improving our understanding not only of early Earth but also of the environments of Mars and the moons of Jupiter Jupiter has sixty-three known natural satellites.
