Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Immtech International with 2004 Customer Value Enhancement Award for Global Health Initiatives.

BOSTON -- Frost & Sullivan has presented Immtech International with the prestigious 2004 Customer Value Enhancement Award for Global Health Initiatives, acknowledging Immtech's commitment to create superior value for its customers by constantly striving to bring more efficacious treatments to market.

the rigorous international clinical development pathway have been instrumental in making this possible," says Frost & Sullivan research analyst Curt A. Herberts III. "Using highly innovative business development strategies, Immtech has been able to hasten both licensing and product development, thereby increasing the speed and productivity of drug development, in addition to alleviating the suffering of disease-ridden populations across the world."

The company's strong focus on oral therapeutics to treat infectious diseases infectious diseases: see communicable diseases.  is expected to bring relief to developing nations by increasing the number of potential treatments to cure these debilitating de·bil·i·tat·ing

Immtech's most promising compound, DB289, is currently in development for the treatment of malaria, pneumocystis carinii pneumonia Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP)

A pathological condition spread among biological species. Infectious diseases, although varied in their effects, are always associated with viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, multicellular parasites and aberrant proteins known as prions.
in the world, accounting for one million deaths of children every year in developing countries, there is an urgent need for effective therapies to cure the epidemic. Immtech's DB289, which is currently undergoing a Phase IIa clinical trial, is targeted toward the most lethal forms of malaria virus - Plasmodium vivax Plasmodium vi·vax

Initial clinical and preclinical data demonstrated encouraging results, revealing that DB289 reached blood concentration levels that are likely to be able to treat malaria in human beings. Further research at the Swiss Tropic Institute showed that DB289 demonstrated positive activity against several forms of this disease including known drug-resistant strains.

With its innovative oral formulation and ease of administration, Immtech has had great success in securing substantial funding to push this drug through the international regulatory clinic. Organizations such as Medicines for Malaria Venture and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria have pledged their financial support for Immtech's development of new oral drugs for malaria.

Immtech has simultaneously been pursuing DB289 in Phase IIb development for PCP, a type of fungal infection fungal infection, infection caused by a fungus (see Fungi), some affecting animals, others plants. Fungal Infections of Human and Animals

In a Phase IIa study conducted in 2002, it was determined that this novel compound was highly effective in treating Trypanosomiasis, with 95 percent of the participants remaining parasite-free up to three to six months after treatment. Expected positive results from the Phase III trials will help Immtech obtain regulatory approval for this therapy and make a critical difference in many African nations.

"Immtech's selective focus on promising compounds in late-stage development and continued devotion toward aggressive product initiatives will help it to bring great value and superior therapies through the regulatory pathway, which in the end will positively impact the health of people around the world," concludes Herberts.

Held in Boston, the Frost & Sullivan banquet will honor world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in customer care. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
