Frost & Sullivan Honors Kollsman for Excellence in Technology Innovation.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Frost & Sullivan in its recent study, Military Avionics Market, honored Kollsman EVS with the 2004 Technology Innovation Award, for its achievement in the field of enhanced vision systems (EVS) for military aircraft.

This annual award is given to the company that has played a pioneering role in its industry by providing cutting-edge products and concepts. The company should also be well equipped to increase its market share through consumer-friendly, marketable solutions that are clearly more efficient than similar offerings from competitors.

With the introduction of the Kollsman All Weather Window(TM) EVS, the company has established itself as a strong participant in the military EVS market. The product significantly improves aircrew situational awareness and can help lower controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) events by providing improved visibility in conditions such as fog, rain or snow.

"In addition to routine aircraft operations, emerging threats against the United States and its allies will require special mission aircraft to often operate in unfamiliar areas often lacking basic airport and navigation equipment," says Frost & Sullivan principal analyst Michel Merluzeau. Last year, a U.S. Navy Gulfstream C-37A was able to proceed safely to its intended destination as weather conditions deteriorated; pilots never lost sight of the runway because of the EVS installed onboard their aircraft."

Kollsman EVS uses proprietary hardware and video processing software algorithms that display an infrared (IR) image of visual cues such as approach lights, runways and taxiways to the pilot. It also reveals other elements of the runway environment such as buildings, ground vehicles, lighted and unlighted aircraft, animals and terrain.

Further, the EVS IR sensor provides the pilot with visual guidance and reference thereby eliminating errors and greatly enhancing crew resource management (CRM). The visual dimension also ensures that the pilot is able to identify the required visual cues under poor visibility conditions.

"Since the EVS IR vastly improves the pilot's situational awareness at decision height and allows other airplanes in the air and on active taxiways/runways to stand out clearly in the EVS image, it reduces the potential for accidental collisions," notes Merluzeau.

Though currently there are several other companies involved in EVS technologies, Kollsman is the only one that has been certified to work with a head-up-display (HUD) and to obtain operational credit (lower landing minimums) for both military and commercial aircraft.
