I've always had an interest in politics, even when I was in school. I ran for class office in high school, and although I didn't win, decided I loved fighting for my ideas, and subsequently joined the debate team. In college, I participated in student government through the four years I was there, and helped create some solid policies for the university as a whole.

With the presidential elections just wrapping up, it reminded me how much good leadership is needed whether it's for a university, a country or an association like NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association
NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY)
NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada)
NRPA National Rifle and Pistol Association
. I've had the pleasure of working with David Lose and Jim Donahue for the past 11 months, and with the new installation of Ron Lehman and Lori Daniel, I have no doubt that these two new leaders will continue the great work David and Jim started.

And on page 90, we look at our past presidents, and why they have been leaders in finding time for recreation, even with busy schedules.

I hope you, as leaders of the park and recreation field, or as influential citizens of your community who work on behalf of parks, find inspiration and tools to help you lead more effectively.
