From the editor. In a city like New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of , full of skycrapers and concrete and seemingly so far removed from anything green or natural, it is surprisingly easy to find tastes of the country if you know where to look. Living and working in the city for the past two years, I came to relish moments like those spent choosing fresh fruits and vegetables at the Union Square Green Market, selecting my own ingredients for fresh-tossed salads at the cafes that pepper midtown, and stopping for inexpensive bouquets of brightly colored flowers at almost any corner market. And an afternoon spent lying on a blanket in Central Park's Great Lawn became a mandatory Saturday escape after a busy week. Before moving to Manhattan from the South, I had never realized how important those things could be. But being immersed in the fast pace and cramped lifestyle of the city made me appreciate more than ever life's simple pleasures--like sipping lemonade on a front porch swing or planting a vegetable garden. Now that I am back in Mississippi, my tomato plants are growing and my porch awaits me every evening. I look forward to discovering enchanting small towns with storied histories and friendly people. And I vow to always stop and smell the roses. Appreciating Mississippi's everyday treasures--and a few that come but once a year--is our focus in this issue. We'll take you on a tour of the beautiful resort town of Bay St. Louis, with its stately architecture, sandy beaches and vibrant art scene. As writer Pat Mowry discovered, the community's Old Town area has in recent years become a haven for art lovers, housing several galleries that showcase everything from pottery to paintings and stained glass stained glass, in general, windows made of colored glass. To a large extent, the name is a misnomer, for staining is only one of the methods of coloring employed, and the best medieval glass made little use of it. . Several acclaimed restaurants and quaint shops in the area add to the appeal, quite possibly making Bay St. Louis the perfect day trip this summer. Back at home, Food Editor Mary Leigh Furrh helps you take advantage of the state's abundant fresh vegetables this season with a medley of easy, mouth-watering mouth·wa·ter·ing or mouth-wa·ter·ing adj.
