From the editor: members on the Hill.

After attending NRPA's National Legislative Forum on Parks and Recreation for three years, I thought I had seen most everything. Most years, legislators are courteous cour·te·ous
adj.
Characterized by gracious consideration toward others. See Synonyms at polite.

[Middle English corteis, courtly, from Old French, from cort, court; see
to our state delegations on Capitol Hill, respond with a lukewarm luke·warm
adj.
1. Mildly warm; tepid.

2. Lacking conviction or enthusiasm; indifferent: gave only lukewarm support to the incumbent candidate.
commitment to park and recreation needs, and hope that our members leave with a good impression.

This year, however, our participants at the Legislative Forum seemed to demand more. In the Capitol Hill meetings I attended, our members held legislators accountable, and weren't ready to accept a tepid tep·id
adj.
1. Moderately warm; lukewarm.

2. Lacking in emotional warmth or enthusiasm; halfhearted: "the tepid conservatism of the fifties" Irving Howe.
response. Because of their tenacity, this year's Forum seemed to yield true, successful results--it was an event that made me proud to be associated with NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association
NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY)
NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada)
NRPA National Rifle and Pistol Association
. (For a full recap of the conference, turn to page 59).

Another exciting undertaking by NRPA this past year was a trip to Sri Lanka Sri Lanka (srē läng`kə) [Sinhalese,=resplendent land], formerly Ceylon, ancient Taprobane, officially Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, island republic (2005 est. pop.  to teach locals and help them build playgrounds for the children in tsunami-ravaged areas. Our members there are making a true difference in the lives of children, just as our certified playground safety inspectors work behind the scenes to make a difference in this country's playgrounds. (See photos from the Sri Lankan trip on page 40).

Whether working on Capitol Hill, in Sri Lanka or in local communities, I'm proud to be part of an organization where our members have such an impact. Keep up the good work!
