Vietnam veteran is a phrase used to describe someone who served in the armed forces of participating countries during the Vietnam War.
 Robert Newell, whose upbringing under an abusive father led him to volunteer for duty in Vietnam, in a time when most other young men sought to dodge the draft. Newell's bravery in combat earned him a Bronze Star; yet he does not pretend that he was a hero. Years afterward, he knows and recounts that he was literally a monster and a war criminal, driven virtually insane by his father and his childhood to the extent that dedicating his life to bloodshed and destruction in the American Army pleased him. His skill at keeping his fellow soldiers alive on point duty led the military to cover up his war crimes, though he was eventually pulled from duty and sent to a hospital for psychiatric treatment.
