Two Consumers and an Employee Receive National Distribution of their Homebrews as Winners of the 2006 Samuel Adams([R]) American Homebrew Contest[TM]

BOSTON -- Two consumer winners in the 2006 Samuel Adams([R]) American Homebrew Contest[TM] were announced at the 25th Annual Great American Beer Festival The Great American Beer Festival (GABF) is a three-day annual event hosted by the Brewers Association held at the end of September or the beginning of October in Denver, Colorado.  (GABF GABF Great American Beer Festival

A winning beer from the Samuel Adams employee homebrew competition, an annual company contest that started in 2001, will also be included in the Samuel Adams([R]) LongShot([R]) mix six-pack. Three finalists poured their beers for GABF attendees to taste and vote for their favorite. Ken Smith's Wheat with BOY-senberry was the crowd favorite and winner of the coveted cov·et

The Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest is a natural tie-back to the company's roots. Samuel Adams([R])founder and brewer Jim Koch began as a homebrewer creating the first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager([R]) in his kitchen. Koch is a recognized pioneer of the U.S. craft brewing revival and knows personally the challenges and rewards of making a quality homebrew.

decided that Little Beast and the Dortmunder Export stood apart from the rest in quality and taste. As for the employee homebrew winner, I am pleased with the palette selection of the festival goers; Ken's Wheat with BOY-senberry is truly exceptional," said Jim Koch. "I'll never forget the feeling I had when Samuel Adams Boston Lager was first sold on shelves nationwide, and I'm excited to share that experience with all three winners."

The consumer homebrews were evaluated by an expert panel of judges, including Jim Koch; Todd Alstrom of BeerAdvocate; William Brand, beer columnist of The Oakland Tribune; Tony Forder of Ale Street News; and Gary Glass of The American Homebrewers Association The American Homebrewers Association is a division of the Brewers Association focused on homebrewers of beer, cider, and mead. The panel determined the final two winning consumer recipes based on the AHA/Beer Judge Certificate Program guidelines. Each beer was evaluated within its own style category and judged by how well certain characteristics were presented and/or exhibited for that category.

MORE ABOUT THE CONTEST AND WINNERS

More than 1,500 beer lovers entered the 2006 Samuel Adams([R]) American Homebrew Contest[TM]. The competition was announced in May and contest hopefuls were directed to the Samuel Adams Web site for rules, regulations, and details on how to purchase a homebrewing kit. Original homebrew entries were sent to regional chapters for judging by mid-August and then narrowed down to five finalists.

The 2006 Contest continues the tradition first established with the 1996 and 1997 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contests.

brewer and pub owner Don Oliver of California, submitted an Old Ale recipe, "Little Beast." An Old Ale is an unusual type of beer that can be aged over time and has a significant alcohol strength that usually tilts toward a sweeter, maltier balance. In Don's version, he used a mix of American, German, and Belgian malts, giving this full-bodied brew a malty malt´y

the balance of bitterness. This well-balanced brew has some residual sweetness in the finish.

Bruce Stott, a long-time resident of Connecticut, currently residing in Massachusetts, entered a Dortmunder Export. This style's hallmark is balance with a malt profile of a Helles, the hop character of a Pilsner, and is slightly stronger than both. Bruce is an accomplished homebrewer, having won "Best of Show" at the 2003 National Homebrewers Competition, and earning the title "Homebrewer of the Year." His original Dortmunder Export recipe caught the attention of the judges for its balance of bitterness and malt definition. He used a simple recipe consisting of just one malt, hops, yeast, and water. This created a pale-gold lager with a blend of Pilsner maltiness and a mild hops aroma.

ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE WINNER AND BREW

Not only are Samuel Adams employees knowledgeable about full-flavored craft beer, they've actually experienced brewing for themselves. Since 2001, Samuel Adams has held an annual company-wide homebrew competition, encouraging participants to experiment in the homebrewing process. Just as Samuel Adams pushes the boundaries of conventional brewing, their employees are just as creative in their homebrewing endeavors.

Employee winner Ken Smith of Colorado submitted a Wheat beer called "Wheat with BOY-senberry." Typical Wheat beers have a light to moderate grainy grain·y

. A national sales training manager, Ken has been with Samuel Adams for 11 years and started homebrewing when the company-wide homebrew competition began in 2001.

The Samuel Adams([R]) LongShot([R])mix six-pack will be available nationwide in select retail stores beginning in February 2007 for a suggested retail price of $6.99-$7.99. The mix pack will include two bottles of each winning consumer's beer from the 2006 Samuel Adams([R]) American Homebrew Contest[TM] and two bottles of the winning Samuel Adams employee homebrew.
