From Republic to Reich. (Letters to the Editor). In all my 54 years, I could never understand how a group of people as intelligent and good-hearted as the German people could allow Hitler to carry out the Holocaust. Now, thanks to William Norman William Norman VC (1832–March 131896) of Warrington was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Grigg's article ("From Republic to Reich," October 7, 2002 issue), the answer seems obvious. The German people lost control of the government as it went from a Republic to Hitler's murderous dictatorship. Hitler gained control of the people through secret conspiracy, betrayal, and corrupt politics. In particular, Hitler called for an "Enabling Act Enabling Act Law passed by the German Reichstag in 1933 that enabled Adolf Hitler to assume dictatorial powers. Deputies from the Nazi Party, the German National People's Party, and the Center Party voted in favor of the act, which “enabled” Hitler's government " to "Protect the Fatherland fa·ther·land n. 1. One's native land. 2. The land of one's ancestors. fatherland Noun a person's native country Noun 1. " from terrorist acts. In that case it was a large arson fire likely caused by a Nazi to provide an excuse for his secret political agenda. The comparison to the U.S. people is obvious. Our willingness to sacrifice personal freedoms to protect us from our "terrorist enemies" is a direct parallel. Chilling. Do you think Americans will be smarter than the German people were, or will we allow ourselves to be betrayed as they were betrayed by Hitler? How much power and control can we trust our government with?
