From Mr. Douglas Peck re Larry Henderson. (Letters to the Editor).I read with interest Father Kennedy's article on Larry Henderson Larry Henderson (born 1917 in Montreal - died November 27, 2006 in London, Ontario) was the first regular newsreader on the CBC Television's The National News, later rebranded as The National, from 1954 to 1959. in the November 2002 issue of Catholic Insight, but I felt he could have said much more about this splendid Catholic. I was privileged to have an acquaintance with Larry when he was editor of the Catholic Register in the late 1970's and early 1980's and I believe that every thinking Catholic should honour him. As a journalist he was not only an anchorman for the CBC (1) (Cell Broadcast Center) See cell broadcast. To my recollection, he was the last CEC (Central Electronic Complex) The set of hardware that defines a mainframe, which includes the CPU(s), memory, channels, controllers and power supplies included in the box. When he took over the editorshship of the Register, the great tidal wave tidal wave, term properly applied to the crest of a tide as it moves around the earth. As Father Kennedy recalled, Larry recruited an articulate, informed, and editorially powerful stable of contributing columnists as defenders of the faith, including Louise Shanahan, Dr. David Dooley, and Father Jonathan Robinson--some of whom unaccountably un·ac·count·a·ble adj. 1. And he put the Holy Father--not only in "the limelight" as Father Kennedy reports-but on the front page. As Managing Editor of Challenge magazine, he continued this tradition of loyalty to the Magisterium mag·is·te·ri·um n. Roman Catholic Church The authority to teach religious doctrine. [Latin, the office of a teacher or other person in authority, from magister, master; see of the Church. Father Kennedy says he was struck by Larry's humility. But what struck me was his courage in the face of all obstacles--a quality that he displayed throughout his life. If one were to discover a parallel for Larry in Church history, it would not be extreme to compare him with St. Athanasius, who was five times exiled in fear of his life for his beliefs, but whose steadfastness helped preserve the eternal truths of the Catholic Faith. Truly, now that he has retired, the sun will shine a little less brightly, and the wind will blow a little colder. Richmond Hill Richmond Hill may refer to: Places:
