From Mr. Camille Goutier re 'for all' and 'for many'.In response to the feature article: "Wily 'for all' in the words of Consecration?" (C.I., Dec. 2004, pp. 12-13), I wish to add the following comments. The Fathers of the Church, the past Popes, before Vatican II Noun 1. Vatican II - the Vatican Council in 1962-1965 that abandoned the universal Latin liturgy and acknowledged ecumenism and made other reforms Second Vatican Council Vatican Council - each of two councils of the Roman Catholic Church , also having access to the same texts of the Bible, arrived at another conclusion. They did not use the expression "for all" in the words of the consecration, and that for thousands of years. They were supposedly inspired by the Holy Spirit. Why did they not arrive at the same conclusion? Fr. Zerwick states: " ... the allusion al·lu·sion n. 1. The act of alluding; indirect reference: Without naming names, the candidate criticized the national leaders by allusion. 2. to the theology of the Servant of Yahweh, however eloquent el·o·quent adj. 1. Characterized by persuasive, powerful discourse: an eloquent speaker; an eloquent sermon. 2. for the ancients, among us is clear only to the experts." Is it really only today that "it is clear only to the experts"? It appears that the argument given reads: "Today we are more educated! Today we have more experience of world problems. Today, we know better. Before Vatican II, they were not educated. They did not have the experience we now have. They didn't know any better." We certainly live in a queer period in the Church when Vatican II conclusions appear in contradiction to what was done or said previous to Vatican II, when pre-Vatican II documents are ignored by the so-called experts of today. Joussard, AB Editor: The thrust of the article was that the other translation "for many" does not contradict con·tra·dict v. con·tra·dict·ed, con·tra·dict·ing, con·tra·dicts v.tr. 1. To assert or express the opposite of (a statement). 2. To deny the statement of. See Synonyms at deny. the earlier one. And yes, as for the history, with all its related sciences of anthropology anthropology, classification and analysis of humans and their society, descriptively, culturally, historically, and physically. Its unique contribution to studying the bonds of human social relations has been the distinctive concept of culture. , archeology, biology, geography, et al., together with the expanded literary knowledge, we moderns know much more about biblical times than our forefathers forefathers npl → antepasados mpl forefathers npl → ancêtres mpl forefathers npl → Vorfahren . |
