From Kenneth Fisher re Cardinal Fisher.I have just read Hugh Loughran's excellent treatise on St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher ("Thomas More & Bishop Fisher," C.I. July/Aug. 2005, pp.22-25). However, I was surprised to read that Loughran called St. John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, a Cardinal. I have visited Bishop Fisher's Cathedral, and this is the first time I have heard of him as a Cardinal. Was this done after his martyrdom, posthumously? If he knows something I don't, please let me in on it. By e-mail Editor: Bishop John Fisher was imprisoned in April, 1534. The new Pope Paul III Paul III, 1468–1549, pope (1534–49), a Roman named Alessandro Farnese; successor of Clement VII. He was created cardinal by Alexander VI, and his influence increased steadily. A very astute church diplomat, he directed his efforts chiefly in aid of the reforming party. With his election a new era in the papacy opened, for papal involvement in the Counter Reformation began. created Bishop Fisher a cardinal in May, 1535, just weeks before his death. |
