From Jim Verreault re Mr. Martin Lanigan's letter to the editor.Given the tone of Mr. Lanigan's letter (C.I., Oct. 2005), it is clear that contrary to his accusations against the editor, it is rather he that is "shameless shame·less adj. 1. Feeling no shame; impervious to disgrace. 2. Marked by a lack of shame: a shameless lie. " in his propaganda to prove his own untenable point. His contention that marriage is "a human construct," and that "it will continue to evolve according to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. In keeping with: according to instructions. 3. the needs and understandings of human society" simply goes beyond the pale. In Matthew 19:6, Christ tells us: "What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder a·sun·der adv. 1. Into separate parts or pieces: broken asunder. 2. Apart from each other either in position or in direction: The curtains had been drawn asunder. ." In light of this Gospel passage, we can be assured that marriage is hardly a "human construct," or open to some mythical evolution based upon the whims of a fickle fick·le adj. Characterized by erratic changeableness or instability, especially with regard to affections or attachments; capricious. [Middle English fikel, from Old English ficol, society. As for Genesis dealing with some sort of "creation myth creation myth or cosmogony Symbolic narrative of the creation and organization of the world as understood in a particular tradition. Not all creation myths include a creator, though a supreme creator deity, existing from before creation, is very common. ," nothing could be further from the truth. As the commentary in the Navarre Bible explains, the account of creation, while "not intending to provide a scientific explanation of the origin of the world and of man, expounds the basic facts and truths on the subject in a way people can readily understand, inviting us to see the greatness and love of God as manifested first in creation and then in the history of mankind." The actual manner in which the universe was created is irrelevant, and is something we may never be able to discover in this life at any rate. What is important is that we continue to have faith in our God, Who not only created us in whatever manner He chose, but continues to sustain us in His infinite love for all mankind.
