I enclose a copy of my letter. I never did receive a response. Now I see (letter, C.I. Nov. 2003) his willingness to endorse the claim that there is a disorder called "homophobia." I begin to wonder if he is not being led up the garden path by current neologisms. "Sexual orientation" is a term which invites the hearer to believe that attraction to the opposite sex and attraction to the same sex are both goods, and both innocent. It is a truthless term. "Homophobia" is a made-up word, undefined, and in fact impervious to any reasonable definition. It invites the hearer to believe that opposition to homosexual behaviour implies some vague disorder, not in the practitioner, but in the opponent of the practice. It is the ideal word, in short, to act as at once a sword and a shield, as an instrument of pointed accusation which at the same time admits of no refutation ref·u·ta·tion also re·fut·al n. 1.
