From Fr. Joseph Thompson re Fr. Decker and "homophobia".

"And there is a kind of reverse abuse when the sexual orientation sexual orientation

of an individual is called into question for appropriateness in ministry" (Fr. Decker, March 2003).

I wrote on March 5, 2003, to the Basilian Superior General, Father Kenneth Decker, in an attempt to engage his acquiescence as to the meaning of the term, "sexual orientation." I enclose a copy of my letter. I never did receive a response.

Now I see (letter, C.I. Nov. 2003) his willingness to endorse the claim that there is a disorder called "homophobia." I begin to wonder if he is not being led up the garden path by current neologisms.

"Sexual orientation" is a term which invites the hearer to believe that attraction to the opposite sex and attraction to the same sex are both goods, and both innocent. It is a truthless term.

"Homophobia" is a made-up word, undefined, and in fact impervious to any reasonable definition. It invites the hearer to believe that opposition to homosexual behaviour implies some vague disorder, not in the practitioner, but in the opponent of the practice.

It is the ideal word, in short, to act as at once a sword and a shield, as an instrument of pointed accusation which at the same time admits of no refutation ref·u·ta·tion   also re·fut·al

I say nothing about Fr. Decker's attempt to defend his $3000 grant to Bridges for Youth to fight "homophobia," by pointing to the hundreds of thousands of dollars earmarked for real causes. That $3000 is the arsenic in the wine of his charity.

But I do say that there is one thing worse than practicing homosexuality or paedophilia paedophilia or US pedophilia

, and that is teaching that these vices are defensible, or even worse, implying just as much by teaching that opposition to such vices is itself a disorder, and doing so subterraneously by employing a truthless name for the disorder. "Homophobia" and "sexual orientation" are more than idle words; they are the use of language to confuse and conceal, in place of its natural usage which is to reveal.

Acquiescence in deliberate bodily sterility begets its own kind of offspring, sterility of the mind.
