of three popular folktales. Especially enticing is the always-popular cumulative tale La viejecita y el cerdo (known in English as The Old Woman and Her Pig), in which the action moves upward in a spiral and then retraces the spiral downward to a satisfying conclusion. Also charming is the classic tale of Sopa de hacha (known English as Stone Soup). In this version, a traveler teaches an old lady to make soup (an axe is the first ingredient). Cardemil's lively full-page illustrations complement the playful tone. Ages 6-8.

This well-known cumulative nursery rhyme has fascinated generations of Spanish speakers. As readers count back from their diez perritos, they humorously recount how they lost all their dogs. Stagno's imaginative illustrations and the joyful rhyming text, followed by the music score, are sure winners. Ages 3-6.

Fiction

Clark, Emma Chichester [??]No mas besos! (No More Kissing!) Illus. by the author. Translated by Cristina Puerta. ISBN 958-04-6884-2. Colombia: Editorial Norma, 2002. 32 pp. pap. $9.95.

Momo, an endearing monkey, complains about constant kissing. It is especially bothersome when strangers kiss him, but Momo also is fed up with his family, who kiss in the mornings, at night, and at family gatherings. When his new baby brother arrives, everybody tries to kiss him, and even Momo "accidentally" kisses him to calm him down. Puerta's first-person Spanish narration is as affectionate as Clark's original, vibrant, color illustrations. Ages 2-5.

Curtis, Jamie Lee Donde van las globos? Un misterio de altura. (Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery.) Illus. by Laura Cornell. Translated by Paula F. Bobadilla. ISBN 84-8488056-7. Barcelona: Ediciones Serres, 2003. 32 pp. $18.95.

Spanish rendition will encourage humorous reflection. Cornell's whimsical double-spread watercolors are as lively as the energetic high-flying balloons that escape over mountains and tall buildings, and that might even reach the stars. Ages 4-8.

Franek, Claire El desastre. (Disaster.) Illus. by the author. Translated by Teodora Muchiz. ISBN 980-257-270-5. Caracas: Ediciones Ekare, 2002. 36 pp. pap. $9.95.

Avant-garde illustrations in dark shades are combined with fonts of different sizes, shapes, and colors to add an almost sinister tone to a make-believe disaster of catastrophical proportions: ruined buildings, cars, highways, and trucks, in what turns out to be only a game-two children amid their cluttered toys. Fans of pretend games will savor the mess. Ages 7-9.

Lewis, Rose Te quiero, nina bonita Bonita (Spanish and Portuguese for "beautiful") is the name of:
  • Bonita Magazine, an international men's magazine
  • Bonita, California
  • Bonita, Louisiana
. (I Love You Like Crazy Cakes.) Illus. by Jane Dyer. Translated by Jose Moran Orti. ISBN 84-8488-054-0. Barcelona: Ediciones Serres, 2002. 30 pp. $15.95.

The loving tone of the autobiographical story of a woman's trip to China to adopt a baby girl is beautifully captured in this tender Spanish rendition. Dyer's original pastel watercolor illustrations warmly depict the woman's first meeting with her new baby, their first night together, and the pleasures of a new life at home. Ages 4-8.

Lobel, Arnold Sopa de ratOn. (Mouse Soup.) Illus. by the author. Translated by Brenda Bellorin. ISBN 980-257-286-1. Caracas: Ediciones Ekare, 2003. 62 pp. pap. $8.95.

Although Comadreja is ready to make mouse soup, Raton finds a way to distract her and not end up in her soup pot. Bellorin's spirited Spanish rendition, and Lobel's endearing ink and watercolor illustrations, have maintained the humor and suspense of the original English edition, first published in 1977. Ages 6-8.

Rylant, Cynthia El caso del mono extraviado. (The Case of the Missing Monkey.) Illus. by G. Brian Karas Karas may refer to:
  • Karas Region, Namibia.
  • Karas Mountains, mountain range in Karas Region.
  • Karas (anime) by Sato Keiichi.

. Translated by Patricia Torres. ISBN 958-04-6866-4. (Torre de Papel) Bogota: Editorial Norma, 2002. 48 pp. pap. $7.95.

Rylant's easy-to-read detective story features two friends--Bony (a rabbit) and Jack (a raccoon raccoon, nocturnal New World mammal of the genus Procyon. The common raccoon of North America, Procyon lotor, also called coon, is found from S Canada to South America, except in parts of the Rocky Mts. and in deserts. )--as they try to recover a little glass monkey that disappeared from the lunch counter of E1 cafe de al Lado. This version, with its snappy Spanish dialog, has maintained the humorous banter and bickering bick·er

Van Allsburg, Chris Van Allsburg, Chris (1949–  ) writer, illustrator, sculptor; born in Grand Rapids, Mich. He graduated from the University of Michigan (1972) and the Rhode Island School of Design (1975), where he taught illustration beginning in 1977.  Mal dia en Rio Seco. (Bad Day at Riverbend.) Illus. by the author. Translated by Diane Luz Sanchez. ISBN 968-166271-7. Mexico: Fondo de Cultura Econbmica, 2000. 32 pp. $15.95.

This story is set in Rio Seco, a quiet town in the Wild West, as it is mysteriously invaded by a blinding light that freezes whatever it touches, leaving a slimy substance on horses, buildings, and people. When Sheriff Ned Hardy and his men aim to solve the mystery, they find themselves trapped in a coloring book as the point of view shifts and reveals a child loosely coloring with her crayons over the bold, black outlines. Spanish-speaking Van Allsburg fans will enjoy the spoof and the zestful Spanish rendition. Ages 7-9.
