From Brigid Elson re Death of the West.


In his review of Patrick Buchanan's book The Death of the West (C.I., Feb. 2005, pp. 40-41) Dr. Dooley writes that with the decline of the "white races of Europe" "civilization will decline, too." Knowing as I do that Dr. Dooley is a true Christian gentleman, I have to believe that only editorial oversight or a momentary mo·men·tar·y

2. Occurring or present at every moment: in momentary fear of being exposed.

3. Short-lived or ephemeral, as a life.

 in judgement could have produced this view.

As Christopher Dawson and others have shown, culture (or civilization) is intimately tied to religion, not race. All races are cultured, more or less. I would even accept the argument that the greatest cultures are Christian either explicitly or implicitly. But the colour of skin has nothing to do with the merits or value of any culture.

As for Buchanan's unwelcoming attitude towards Mexicans, does he forget that they are Christians, indeed mostly Catholic? As such they have much of value to offer the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , a country still suffering from a hangover induced by its Calvinistic version of religion in which one's economic and social success are the markers of one's spiritual status. The message of the hugely popular TV evangelist evangelist (ĭvăn`jəlĭst) [Gr.,=Gospel], title given to saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The four evangelists are often symbolized respectively by a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle, on the basis of Rev. 4.6–10.  aptly named Creflo A. Dollar typifies the enduring power of this thoroughly American heresy heresy, in religion, especially in Christianity, beliefs or views held by a member of a church that contradict its orthodoxy, or core doctrines. It is distinguished from apostasy, which is a complete abandonment of faith that makes the apostate a deserter, or former .
