He defeated eleven opponents in the jungle primary held on October 20, 2007, including two prominent Democrats, State Senator Walter Boasso of Chalmette and , a Republican, is the nation's first Indian-American Governor. India so his mother could earn a graduate degree in nuclear physics at
Louisiana State.
