The deployment of Checkpoint's technology is part of the redesign of the Frisco Library that was necessitated by the extraordinary growth of the suburban Dallas community, which has seen its population soar SOAR - 1. Checkpoint's Intelligent Library System is an innovative Radio Frequency Identification See RFID.  (RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. The tag, also known as an "electronic label," "transponder" or "code plate," is made up of an RFID chip attached to an antenna. )-based system that helps library administrators in two major ways.

First, it streamlines operations and enhances efficiencies by allowing patrons to check out materials on their own, using self-service kiosks The self-service kiosk rose with the development of the ATM and adoption by consumers coupled with advanced technologies such as touch-screens. Self-service kiosks are hardware devices that work in combination with self service software, allowing users to perform any number of  located throughout the library. The kiosks reduce the time librarians spend handling materials by as much as 75 percent. Second, it controls losses through electronic security for all of the items in a library's collection, protecting them from unauthorized removal from the library.

"As we were drawing up the plans for how we wanted to redesign our library for the next generation, it became very clear to me that all public libraries will have to make do with fewer employees and tighter budgets in the future," said Dr. Ron Heezen, director of the Frisco Public Library. "In this context, we researched a variety of technology options and concluded that RFID provided us with the technology framework to make the most of the resources we would have at our disposal for the foreseeable future."

Dr. Heezen, he interviewed a number of potential RFID vendors from the U.K., Canada and throughout the U.S., before selecting Checkpoint Systems.

"Checkpoint was the only company with whom we spoke who consistently came back to us with creative approaches for how they could make their technology work to meet our needs," said Dr. Heezen. "As a library administrator, you have a great appreciation for a vendor that works with you as a partner, not just a vendor looking to close their next deal. Checkpoint is clearly here to help libraries by developing solutions to meet our unique needs."

Frisco has just deployed Checkpoint's RFID system in its existing facility and will be expanding the system when it relocates to a new main library in 2006.
