Friendly in healthcare imbroglio.


Friendly Ice Cream is taking heat for having cut health care benefits for some 450 of its fulltime employees. According to according to

 local press reports, the Massachusetts-based restaurant chain and manufacturer of packaged frozen desserts lowered the amount its workers had to pay toward their premiums, but has also cut back on the coverage being provided.

The move was considered to be something of a surprise, given Friendly's traditional reputation as a worker-friendly employer. Still, the company has struggled financially over the past few years, and the decision to reduce benefits is not out of line with the actions being taken by employers in industries of all types, most notably of late in the auto industry.

The Massachusetts labor movement came down hard on Friendly, holding a rally outside the company's headquarters in Wilbraham, MA. But labor leaders used the occasion to point out that a lack of health insurance was becoming an issue for workers throughout the state.
