When a coup d' etat erupts in Haiti, American-born Mardi Desravines flees the country to rejoin her parents in Brooklyn. Raised in Haiti since she was four, Mardi recounts her memories of the coup and the struggles she has assimilating in her adopted country.

When Mardi's uncle joins them in Brooklyn, she has mixed feelings. She believes his anti-coup statements led to her rape.

Haitian-American author Jafra Placide's debut novel is a gritty coming-of-age tale for young adults. Placide weighs her character down with all the ordinary pressures that teens face and the extraordinary ones that immigrants face.

Even so, Mardi proclaims, "I have the skin of an alligator alligator, large aquatic reptile of the genus Alligator, in the same order as the crocodile. There are two species—a large type found in the S United States and a small type found in E China. Alligators differ from crocodiles in several ways. " Indeed, her newfound sassiness has her family wondering where this "fresh girl" came from. The author slowly sheds Mardi's thorny layers, exposing the scared and confused child that she really is. Blanketed with the love and familiarity of her family and culture, Mardi slowly regains her sense of self-worth, revels Not to be confused with Revel.
