Written by Jean Ann (assoc. professor in the Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction, SUNY SUNY - State University of New York  Oswego), Frequency of Occurrence and Ease of Articulation of Sign Language Handshapes: The Taiwanese Example is a contribution to sign language linguistics linguistics, scientific study of language, covering the structure (morphology and syntax; see grammar), sounds (phonology), and meaning (semantics), as well as the history of the relations of languages to each other and the cultural place of language in human  research that particularly examines Taiwanese Sign Language Taiwanese Sign Language (TSL) is the sign language most commonly used in Taiwan. It is the native language of some 50,000 people in the Republic of China.

TSL was heavily influenced by Japanese Sign Language during Japanese rule and thus has some mutual intelligibility with
 in its search to discover whether the use of specific sign language handshapes increases in direct relation to the ease of their physical formation. Chapters discuss the anatomy and physiology physiology (fĭzēŏl`əjē), study of the normal functioning of animals and plants during life and of the activities by which life is maintained and transmitted. It is based fundamentally on the activities of protoplasm.  of the human hand, followed by a basic model of ease of handshape articulation, and go on to compare ease and frequency at length. A scholarly, in-depth study and a welcome addition to linguistics reference shelves, particularly those concerning sign language.
