French Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department Chooses Atempo to Protect Mission and Surveillance Data; Time Navigator protects over 1000 workstations.

PALO ALTO, Calif. and PARIS -- Atempo, a leader in data protection for information lifecycle management, today announced that the French Navy's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department Entity (EPSHOM) has chosen its Time Navigator(TM) to protect the critical data generated by its three main sites and all information collected by its mission boats. Part of the French Navy, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department's (SHOM) mission is acting as public service and as a support for French Navy Forces.

SHOM is at national level in charge of navigation information including the collection, validation, and dispatch of all information used by civil or commercial navigators (sea charts, directory of the tides, nautical instructions, guide of the navigator and so forth). SHOM also collects and dispatches to the High Command of the French Navy Forces more detailed and specific information about marine environment and produces operational documents. SHOM's head office is in Paris. It also operates a main site in Brest (EPSHOM), two mission sites in Brest (Atlantic Hydrographic mission, Atlantic Oceanographic mission), one mission site in Noumea (Pacific Oceanographic mission) and an office in Toulon. More than 700 employees are working for the SHOM, 500 located in Brest.

EPSHOM selected Atempo's Time Navigator software to replace the previous backup system that could no longer meet its narrow backup window. "Backup problems with our Oracle databases and the lack of single data protection platform led us to seek an enterprise data protection solution. We selected Time Navigator because it offers data protection across heterogeneous platforms, including Oracle database backup, as well as its ease of use and installation and intuitive GUI. Moreover, Time Navigator offered unparalleled recovery and backup performance enabling us to meet our ever shrinking backup windows," said Michel Le Gouic, EPSHOM Backup Manager.

Additionally, Time Navigator's archiving feature is proving highly valuable in support of EPSHOM's mission. As ships head out to sea from their mission bases from five weeks to six months on hydrographic or oceanographic campaigns, they are continually producing data that is backed up to a L20 tape library. Upon their return to base, mission generated data are archived to be used and referenced on new missions.

Michel Le Gouic continued, "A sea chart represents 50 to 60 Mb, with the total volume of protected data today ranging from 1.5 to 3 Terabytes. EPSHOM forecasts that in 10 years time, protected data will average to 10 to 12 Terabytes. Time Navigator scalability will enable us to cope with the exponential growth of our data."
