Freescale's PowerQUICC(TM) III Device Enables Gigahertz Processing, Networking and Encryption in Office Printing Equipment.

TOKYO -- MPC8533E Built on Power Architecture(TM) Technology Supports Industry Standards for Secure Networking and Energy Efficiency in Color and Multifunction Printers and Copiers

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) introduces the highly integrated MPC8533E PowerQUICC(TM) III -- an SoC optimized for high-speed, next-generation hard copy office equipment that offers an outstanding combination of gigahertz performance, on-chip integration and low power consumption.

Dynamic shifts in regulations, performance and functionality requirements are impacting the high-growth color printing and imaging market. The MPC8533E balances computational and control processing for color and multifunction printers (MFP) to help deliver fast color processing, MFP application concurrency and other compute-intensive operations.

"The MPC8533E is suited ideally for enterprise-class office printing equipment, but can be used in many additional applications including industrial and IP services equipment."

Supports Industry Standards

To improve privacy and security, the MPC8533E implements integrated security hardware acceleration to support the pending IEEE(R) P2600 standard from the Hardcopy Device and System Security Working Group. Regulatory requirements for document security and confidentiality needed in medical, financial and other business offices are helping drive the standard. The P2600 defines requirements for security including authentication, authorization, privacy, integrity and device management for manufacturers and users of next-generation office equipment.

Freescale, Peerless Systems and EMRT will demonstrate PowerQUICC III hardware acceleration capabilities at the Freescale Technology Forum in Japan on Sept. 13.

"The need for network secure applications is increasing significantly," said Edward Gaughan, vice president of sales and marketing for Peerless Systems. "The PeerlessNet Security Software Development Kit is being enhanced to enable MPC8533E hardware acceleration for various secure communication applications, including implementation of the IEEE P2600 end-to-end printing standard for office equipment manufacturers."

The fanless operation and low power-consumption design of the MPC8533E benefits equipment manufacturers who support ENERGY STAR(R), the program developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to encourage energy efficient solutions for businesses and consumers. This program provides guidelines for energy management to help measure, track and set goals for energy consumption.

MPC8533E Key Benefits

The MPC8533E processor offers a flexible SoC platform with a large 256KB L2 Cache and an e500v2 core based on Power Architecture technology operating up to 1GHz. Its high speed serial interface supports the high bandwidth PCI Express(R) open standard and Gigabit Ethernet to enhance high-speed media transfer in printing and imaging systems. Several hardware acceleration engines onboard the MPC8533E include Double Precision Floating Point, Signal Processing Engine, TCP Offload and Freescale's industry-leading Security Acceleration Engine.

Pricing and Availability

The MPC8533 without encryption and the MPC8533E with encryption are manufactured on Freescale's 90nm process technology and offered in a 783-pin FC-PBGA package. Early samples of the MPC8533 and MPC8533E are planned to be available Q1 2007, and production availability is expected to begin in Q4 2007. Suggested 2007 resale pricing for the 1GHz MPC8533E processor with 400 MHz DDR starts at $64.79(USD) MSRP in 10K unit quantities.
