It celebrates independence and autonomy, one's personal influence and power and both socioeconomic and geographic mobility. "The genius of President Bush," according to Patterson, "is that he has acquired an exquisite grasp of this development in American political culture, and he can play both versions of freedom to his advantage." The point of conflict with religious and cultural fanatics similarly eludes simple characterization. The contrary may well be the case with those seeking privatized freedoms, measured by the acquisition of influence and radical personal socioeconomic advantage. This version of freedom is less concerned about the fine points of critical religious discourse, favoring instead selective usage of texts to support private gain. Modern critical biblical theologians must recognize the challenge that faces them when confronting the tsunamis of religious and cultural fanaticism. Critical biblical theologians must learn not only to show another way, which accords more with the modern versions of freedom based on civil liberties and social justice, but also to promote this more reasonable reading of scripture, which can otherwise easily carry the force of destruction of our social systems. Agendas that serve to substitute personal advantage for civil rights and social justice need to be recognized for what they are, especially when the scriptures are used wrongfully toward that end.
