Freedom of association: a special message from Wayne Gross, TAPPI Executive Director.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 have deeply affected everyone. We at TAPPI extend our heartfelt sympathy to all of the victims of this senseless violence. The scope of this tragedy is truly horrific. The courage and dedication of the firefighters and rescue workers is inspiring and we can take comfort in the unbounded generosity and unyielding spirit demonstrated by Americans in recent days.

This was more than an attack on innocent people; it was an attack on a way of life that values individual expression, freedom to pursue individual interests, and freedom of association. As Alexis de Tocqueville wrote: "If men are to remain civilized or to become more so, the act of association must grow and improve." In these most difficult times, we must as an association pull together in strength and unity.

A key element of our strength as an association is our diversity. TAPPI is made up of members from more than 70 countries, representing many backgrounds and beliefs. In the days following the attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., I was especially moved by the outpouring of caring and concern from TAPPI members outside the United States. It is my hope that freedom loving people around the world will join together to defeat these terrorists. However, let us not be tempted to lash out at innocent people in our grief and anger.

TAPPI is in the business of bringing people together: Each year thousands of members take part in face-to-face meetings. While we will be mindful of our members' safety, we will continue to provide opportunities for members to attend conferences, courses, and trade fairs. The 2001 TAPPI Engineering/Finishing and Converting Conference, which was postponed after the tragic events on September 11, has been rescheduled for December 2-6 in San Antonio, Texas. Also, the Corrugated Containers and Pulping Conferences will go on as scheduled. In the face of difficult economic times and instability, you can count on TAPPI to continue to provide the resources and solutions our members need and deserve.
