Park and recreation departments can sign up to host PHR, a free and easily administered skills competition, and provide boys and girls boys and girls mercurialisannua. ages 7-14 the opportunity to showcase their pitching, hitting and running abilities. Local competitions can be offered anytime from March 1 through mid-May. Carter also advanced through the sectional competition hosted at Golden Park, the Columbus Catfish Minor League stadium. In June, Carter went on to compete at the Atlanta Braves Team Championship competition at Turner Field, where he placed first in his age group and became eligible to advance to the PHR National Finals at the 2006 MLB All-Star Game in Pittsburgh, Pa., in July. In Pittsburgh, Carter was able to attend VIP events at All-Star FanFest, meet current MLB players such as Derek Jeter, Tom Glavine, Ichiro Suzuki and Andrew Jones, and compete in the PHR National Finals on-field at PNC Park. After the competition, Carter and the other 15 national finalists were honorary outfielders during the Century 21 Homerun Derby.
