FORMER Olympic medalist An Olympic medalist is the winner of a medal in one of the Olympic Games. There are three classes of medal: gold, silver and bronze. Some countries, besides supporting all their Olympic athletes, pay sums of money and gifts to medal winners depending on the classes and number of  Steve Cram Steve Cram MBE (born October 14 1960) is a retired English athlete. Along with fellow Englishmen Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, he was one of the world's dominant middle distance runners during the 1980s.  dusted off his running shoes to promote free school dinners.

Pupils from 15 primary schools across County Durham joined Jarrowborn Cram at Chester-le-Street's Riverside Cricket Ground to take in a day of celebrating healthy living.

The youngsters and the former middle-distance runner tucked into healthy school meals, got involved in a cooking demonstration and watched a drama by students from Shotton Hall School, Peterlee, on the importance good food and exercise.

Over the next two years, every primary pupil in County Durham will get free school meals as part of a Government pilot scheme.

The scheme involves 244 schools and will see up to 30,000 children get one hot meal a day.

Due to finish in August 2011, the scheme is being jointly funded by central Government, Durham County Council and NHS NHS
