"I'm not an un-confident parent," Matthews said. But sometimes a parent wonders: Is this the right way to do this? "It's nice to have something say your instincts are right," she said. The booklet has previously only been distributed through hospitals, schools and agencies. But as part of United Way's 10-year celebration of its Success By 6 initiative, the free guide is now being offered at a half-dozen retail locations around Eugene and Springfield. The books will be available through Christmas and would make a nice gift or stocking stuffer for a parent, said Cheryl Crumbley, marketing and communications director for United Way of Lane County. The guides are aimed at parents with babies and small children through age 6, and address such subjects as child development, nutrition, health and safety, adjusting to a growing child, and day-to-day advice. The inside cover contains a host of relevant phone numbers and hotlines. One piece of advice, meanwhile, appears on the bottom of every single page: "Sing, talk and read to your baby every day!" Some of the most helpful parts of the book for Matthews were tips on activities for parents to do with their baby, she said. With a newborn newborn /new·born/ (noo´born?) 1. recently born. 2. newborn infant. new·born adj. Very recently born. n. A neonate. , it's sometimes hard to know how to engage them, she said. The book offers basic tips, suggesting, for example, that a parent with a 3- to 6-month-old can "play `Peek-a-Boo,' `This Little Piggy' and other games." Though her son didn't immediately interact, "We did all those things," Matthews recalled. "I was amazed a·maze v. a·mazed, a·maz·ing, a·maz·es v.tr. 1. To affect with great wonder; astonish. See Synonyms at surprise. 2. Obsolete To bewilder; perplex. v.intr. the first time he responded." Matthews said she kept her copy of the parenting guide on a bookshelf with other kids and resource books, and would "absolutely" recommend it to new parents. Since 2005, more than 50,000 copies of the book have been distributed. The book was adapted for Lane County from materials created by United Way of Escambia County Escambia County is the name of two counties in the United States of America:

The content has since been revised, and United Way hopes to complete the Spanish translation in the next couple of months. Success By 6 is a local initiative that has focused on significantly reducing child abuse and neglect in Lane County. It was officially launched in 1998 in response to several high-profile cases of child abuse. A crucial component in reducing abuse and neglect, Crumbley said, is educating parents. It is staffed by trained parent educators who can answer questions about parenting, child development and behavior, and family stress - and refer callers to other appropriate services. About 90 percent of callers' inquiries are resolved right on the spot, Crumbley said. The Parent HelpLine is available Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 485-5211 or (888) 485-5211. Citing numbers from the state Department of Human Services, Crumbley said child abuse rates have dropped by roughly 5 percent in Lane County between 2001 and 2006. "It's huge for the few hundred kids that it represents," she said. "CHILDREN DO COME WITH DIRECTIONS" Free parenting guide now available at local stores Bambini Downtown, 205 W.
