During BHW 2004: --More than 160,000 people are expected to receive health services in 17 U.S. states; --Over 660 BHW events will take place in more than 180 cities and localities; and --Approximately 2,800 people are contributing to BHW activities through over 670 agencies. Binational Health Week was created in 2001 by CMHI to improve the health and well-being of migrant workers and their families. This weeklong series of events benefits underserved Latinos regardless of their national origin. This year, with the participation of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and the U.S. Mexico Border Health Commission, BHW is being expanded from California to 16 other U.S. states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C.
