Freak injury could end Fasliyev career; RACING.

BETTING for next year's 2,000 Guineas was thrown into confusion tonight when Fasliyev, a leading fancy for the Millennium event, suffered a pastern fracture after being turned out into a paddock at trainer Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle yard.

Bookmakers William Hill and Coral both quoted the unbeaten colt 6-1 second favourite for next May's event but on hearing the news withdrew him from their lists, tightening favourite Distant Music to 7-2 from 4- 1.

Fasliyev, who yesterday was ruled out of Saturday's Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, suffered the freak injury when cantering in the paddock yesterday morning.

He was taken to Troytown Hospital, Kildare to have the fracture evaluated after being attended to to by leading Irish veterinary surgeon John Halley.

In a statement to PA Sport, the colt's trainer said: ''Fasliyev sustained a pastern fracture at Ballydoyle this morning.

''He has been attended to by veterinary surgeon John Halley, who has moved him to Troytown Hospital, Kildare for evaluation and surgery.

''At present, Dr Wayne McIlwraith of Colorado State University is en route to assist and consult with the surgery.

''We will issue a further statement when we have more news.''

Fasliyev numbers victories in Royal Ascot's Coventry Stakes, the Group One Heinz 57 Phoenix Stakes at Leopardstown and the Prix Morny at Deauville - also a Group One event - among his five successes.

After ruling the colt out of the Dewhurst, O'Brien had been looking forward to his charge's Classic campaign and had been quoted as saying he thought Fasliyev would be a better horse next season.

However, last night's grim news could mean the last may have been seen of the colt on the track.
