Franz Inc. Ships Lisp Development Environment Allegro CL 5.0.1.; New Version Adds Platforms, System Enhancements and Features.


BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 1999--

Franz Inc Franz Inc. was founded in early 1984 as a vehicle to produce and sell Macsyma. While that never developed into a business, Franz Inc. did sell Franz Lisp while working on their own Common Lisp implementation. Franz Lisp died out in the 80s as Common Lisp became more popular. . In addition to providing International Character Set support on the Windows version (already available on Unix/Linux), improved database connectivity and a variety of other enhancements, Version 5.0.1 is now available on four new platforms: MkLinux DR3, LinuxPPC R4, FreeBSD 3.x, and Alpha Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  4.0.

Further, the new version of Allegro ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  interfaces efficiently with such database systems as Oracle, Sybase, Informix and Ingres.

Allegro CL is a fully loaded cross-platform development environment powered by ANSI-standard Common Lisp, which includes the Common Lisp Object System (language) Common LISP Object System - (CLOS) An object-oriented extension to Common LISP, based on generic functions, multiple inheritance, declarative method combination and a meta-object protocol.  (CLOS CLOS - Common LISP Object System ). Allegro CL's dynamic object-oriented technology allows developers to create mission-critical applications that are robust, extensible, and easy to evolve and deploy.
