Coppola
 is directing a theater workshop of a musical adaptation of "Gidget" with a select group of students from the Orange County High School of the Arts Established in 1987 by Dr. Ralph Opacic, the Orange County High School of the Arts (commonly referred to using the acronym OCHSA ) is a 7th through 12th grade, tuition free, donation dependent, public charter school located in downtown Santa Ana, in Orange County, California. .

Coppola, who co-wrote the script with Cintra Wilson Cintra Wilson is an American writer who writes about celebrity in America. She is a frequent contributor to Salon.com and the San Francisco Examiner. She usually attempts to project a humorous, sharply sarcastic tone.  and Zack Emery, is working with the school to workshop the story as a musical.

"I've always been interested in musicals and always wanted to write and direct one," said Coppola. "I felt 'Gidget' the original one and the novel, not the subsequent TV Gidgets, is a beautiful coming of age story and one that lends itself to musical treatment."

Coppola and John Farrar wrote the music and lyrics. Farrar's work includes the hit songs "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "You're The One That I Want" from the musical "Grease." Coppola had written all the songs, both lyrics and music for the ill-fated "Pinocchio." He was also the co-composer of the music for "Apocalypse Now."

The cast is comprised of 35 students and alumni from the High School of the Arts School of the Arts is the name of several schools (usually high schools) that are devoted to the fine arts, including:

Mulroney was born in Alexandria, Virginia to Ellen, a housewife and amateur actress originally from Manchester, Iowa, and Michael Mulroney, a law professor at Villanova
, star of the romantic comedy "My Best Friend's Wedding," is working with the cast in the role of "The Big Kahoona."

Both Coppola and Mulroney are thrilled with the talent, training and professionalism of the entire Orange County High School of the Arts group and are both having the time of their lives. "Working with these talented young people is a joy," said Coppola. "They are full of life; totally creative and competent; poised and polite and bring so much of themselves to the show."

The four-week workshop culminates Aug. 3-6 with live performances. Shows will be held at Los Alamitos High School's Margaret A. Webb Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. , 3591 Cerritos Avenue. Showtimes are at 8:00 p.m. Aug. 3-6 and matinee shows will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5-6 at 2 p.m. Reserved seats are available for a $10 donation to the Orange County High School of the Arts. The Orange County High School of the Arts was established in 1987 to provide pre-professional training to students throughout Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. It offers instruction on a tuition-free basis to students from Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties.
